An elderly woman and a young relative looking through an old photo album together at a table
The window is closing

There's a shoebox of photographs nobody can name anymore.

Somewhere in your family there's a box of old photographs — black and white portraits, holiday snaps, wedding pictures. The people who can still say who that is, where it was, what happened that day are in their seventies, eighties, nineties.

Apps that ask elderly relatives to record video replies or write things down don't work for the people who hold the most knowledge. VellumHold flips it round: you run the app. They just talk.

The Sunday afternoon visit

One coherent record, from the very first tap.

A photograph, the story told about it, and everyone named in it — bound together, and never separated again.

One

Snap the photo

Hold up the old photograph and take a quick snap. No scanner, no fuss — just a placeholder so the story has somewhere to live.

Two

Press record and listen

Your relative talks about the photo — who's in it, where it was, what they remember. VellumHold records every word, in their voice.

Three

Search and listen back

Search by name, place, or year to find any story in seconds. Listen to the recording, read the transcript, or share the whole record with the rest of the family — exactly as it was captured.

What we promise

Built on a few things we won't compromise on.

When we had to choose between "easier to build" and "right for families holding onto memories" — we chose the second, every time.

Nothing is ever lost

The original photo, the raw recording, the verbatim transcript — none of it is ever deleted or replaced. Everything is kept, side by side, for good.

Own your archive

Export everything — every photo, recording, transcript and caption — as a ZIP file, any time, on the free plan too. If we disappeared tomorrow, your family loses nothing.

No errors during the visit

VellumHold works offline. Capture an entire afternoon with no signal at all — it quietly syncs once you're back online.

Before you ask

The questions families ask us most.

How is VellumHold different from Storyworth or Remento?

Those services email a weekly prompt that your relative answers on their own, by writing or talking into an app. VellumHold is built for sitting together. You hold up an old photograph, press record, and your relative tells you about it — who's in it, where it was, what happened. The photo, the recording and the story stay bound together as one record.

Does my elderly relative need a smartphone or have to use the app?

No. You run everything. They just sit, hold the photographs, and talk. There's nothing for them to download, log into, or figure out — which is the whole point.

What happens to our photos and recordings if I stop paying, or if VellumHold goes away?

They stay yours. You can export everything — every photo, recording, transcript and caption — as a ZIP file at any time, including on the free plan. You can always listen back to what you've already captured, even if your subscription lapses. If we disappeared tomorrow, your family would lose nothing.

Do I need a scanner or a good internet connection?

Neither. You snap a quick photo of each picture to hold its place, and can add a high-quality scan later if you want one. And VellumHold works fully offline — capture a whole afternoon with no signal at all, and it quietly syncs once you're back online.

Can I turn the stories into a printed book?

Printed keepsake books are coming after launch. Everything you capture is designed to become one — the photos, the words, and the people named in them — so when books arrive, your archive is already ready.
